About Us
A member club of the National Flute Association, the Long
Island Flute Club was founded in 1984 to enrich the musical
lives of flutists in the greater New York area.
Serving professional and student flutists, the club offers a
diverse calendar of events each season. The acclaimed LIFC
concert series has become an integral part of the Long Island
arts scene, attracting an audience of flutists and the general
public.
The LIFC offers several performing opportunities with our flute choir
program. The LIFC Professional Flute Choir and Honors Student Flute Choir
open our concert season each year, and the annual LIFC Holiday Flute
Ensemble Concerts benefit selected charities and is always well received by
the holiday audiences.
Our programs for students offer the opportunity for both musical growth
and community involvement. Our annual Flute Festival provides an
enjoyable day of performing master classes and workshops for all levels of
players. Our Student Recital program provides students from beginner to
grade 9 the opportunity to perform in concert at a local geriatric care
facility, providing valuable opportunities for community service.
For more advanced student flutists our High School competition, started in
1985, has been a stepping stone for many pursuing successful musical
careers. Additionally, the LIFC, with support from the Brannen-Cooper Fund,
has hosted several Master Class competition and concert weekends. Past
Master class/Concert programs have featured flutists Susan Milan, Michel
Debost and Donald Peck.
The LIFC is committed to expanding the flute choir repertoire, by
commissioning works from such respected composers as Katherine Hoover,
Elizabeth Brown, Catherine McMichael and Howard Buss. The LIFC was the
recipient of a 2008 Brannen-Cooper Fund grant for commissioning new
flute music.
Our e-newsletter, Flute Notes, informs members of upcoming events.
